How gematria works

Gematria is an ancient system of numbers which originated in Ancient Greek and Hebrew culture. The core principle of this system is the idea that a number can represent a concept, and thus words have numerical values. In its most basic definition, Gematria is the calculation of the numerical value of words based on their numerical equivalents.

The Jewish tradition of Gematria relies on the fact that each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a corresponding number assigned to it. To calculate a word's numerical value, all one needs to do is to add up the following digits associated with each letter (1 = aleph, 2 = beth, 3 = gimel, 4 = daleth etc). This gives each word its specific numerical value while all other words have different values.

Using Gematria it is possible to uncover hidden meanings in text due to the fact that many words sound similar simply due to their shared numerical values—for example Nero and Noah have the same numerical values (50 + 6 + 200 + 50). This has been used as evidence for a range of theories about coded messages in religious texts or even astrological correspondences between planets and letters.

Gematria has also been used historically as a tool for divination through numerology—that means someone can look into their future by looking at numbers and discovering their own personal destiny encoded in those digits. By comparing two sets of Gematria results it's possible for someone to gain insight into their past, present and future simultaneously. Some people believe that this process can be used as a form of guidance or prediction - although these prophecies are not necessarily seen as infallible.
